Takako Sensei is coming to Las Vegas to give us another work shop some time in January 2011 in preparation for the July Seminar. We are planning two full days of training on a Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 5 each day. You all can help out by scouting for an indoor location we can use or lease for full distance shooting. It needs to be at least 110 feet deep and 40 ft wide. Sensei indicated he wants the training to be at full (28 meter) distance. Since Takako Sensei is coming at her renmei's expense so everybody plan on being there for both days and the full time. This is a great opportunity for us to get expert training without spending a fortune on travel.

Good afternoon, everyone! Just so everyone knows, this Saturday we will meet at Sensei's house at 9:15 am. The time is imperative because we will begin watching the videos that Walter recently bought from the Florida Kyudo Renmei. You don't want to miss any of it, do you? The videos should take about an hour and a half to watch.

After we watch the videos, the backyard may be open for practice. So, if you have your own equipment, be sure to bring it.

As I grow older I am losing my strength, and my body is robbing me of my ability to do kyudo in the way that I would like. 12/26 and New Year's shoot

Good day, everyone! This Saturday, practice will be at the Recreation Center. Try to be there before 9:30 so we can get a few good hours of tai hai practice in. This is especially important for anyone who plans on testing in the future.

Once again, the New Year 100 arrow shoot will be held this Saturday, January 2nd. The shoot is tentatively scheduled to begin between 8 or 9 a.m. This will be a potluck, and anyone who plans on attending is expected to bring something. Currently, this is what food will be brought:
Sensei: stew, hot tea
Genrick: teriyaki
Karen: rib eye steaks, shrimp, lasagna
Windy: breakfast foods (ie bagels and cream cheese)
(me) Chloe: cookies/ bottled soda

No one else has told me what they are planning on bringing. Please contact me ASAP and let me know what you intend to bring if you have not done so already. Plan on bringing enough for roughly ten people. We are still in need for some kind of snack food (ie mozzarella sticks, chicken pieces, etc), anything else warm to eat, or perhaps a traditional japanese dish. If you have any soda preferences and/or want something to drink beside soda, please let me know. Also, anyone who has or wants to wear kimono in concert with their keiko-gi is welcome do so for this special occasion. If you have any other questions/concerns, please let me know.

Some Final Reminders

Hey there! I just wanted to remind everyone of a few things before we get ready to attend the Ren. Fair:

-Women: If you choose to wear kimono/yukata, please bring a tasuki! It should be 4 to 5 cm in width and at least 2 m in length. If you have any more questions about tasukisabaki, please contact me before or during the Ren Fair. Also, if you have any questions about properly wearing kimono/yukata, contact me. However, I'm hoping that everyone can figure that one out on their own ;)

-Everyone: I know there are a lot of unusual people and behaviors going on at the Ren. Fair, but for the love of everything good, please remain dignified and respectable while representing kyudo and our dojo! If you want to join in on the comradarie and fun, that's fine, but please do not indulge in reckless actions while wearing your uniform and/or kimono! We are there to first and foremost exemplify kyudo. Do not do our dojo or sensei any disrespect by acting like some of the people who will be there.

-Safety is our first priority. During the tournament, be sure to follow all the rules stringently. Remember the Raiki Shagi and Shaho-Kun: accuracy and beating other is not our first priority in kyudo. Please refrain from becoming over-competetive.

Rennaissance Faire

Hello all,
It is that time of the year again. We will be shooting at the Ren Faire. Details of when and where we are shooting in the tournament won't be know until that weekend. Please remember you will need to be, most importantly, a dojo member in good standing in order to participate.
This means:
1) Making sure all your monthly dues are up to date and not owe the dojo additional unpaid fees.
2) Taking care to properly represent the art of Kyudo at this event.
Participation with our dojo in this event is perdicated upon the correct wearing of appropriate wafuku (japanese) clothing. You can not shoot ya with yumi and yugake if you are not properly dressed. If you choose to wear clothing that is not perscribed you must observe or shoot a western bow. If you don't have wafuku (kimono or keikogi) we will have loaner uniforms available. It is important to fully and properly represent kyudo whenever possible.

Please commend and give much appreciation to Karen, Chloe and Genrick for operating the space this pass weekend. Thank you all that donated items to make this event happen.We made $105 and some change. My observation on what things that sold were: Jewelry, potted plants and seeds, women's clothing (scarves), books (novels and cookbooks), ceramic figurines. What didn't sell to many (if any): videos, (vhs), hand bags nor hats. We can use these funds towards a new shajo at sensei's house or material to re-fletch arrows.

Well, I tried my hand at this logo. I just drew it in black marker, let me know what you think. The mountain was based off of sunrise mountain, and I didn't know the 'yamaji dojo' kanji offhand, but ideally, that's what should be in the upper right hand corner. Obviously, it's not perfect, but I figured I might as well throw my two cents in there.

After some research on tote bags in general, it seems that these items are steep in pricing. Windy had suggested instead of tote bags we make Furoshiki instead. I know that with approximately $5 and 1 hour at the sewing machine, I could probably make 6 of them. All we need now is a Dojo Logo or some kinda pattern to silk screen on them....

Notes from Kyudo 2009

Lecture two, Thursday Okazaki sensei
Daisan - This is an incredibally important possition, however when I watch you today you are going to Daisan because that's what you do before Kai.
For me Daisan is another way of preparing for entering into Kai.
It's a preperatory phase of entering into Kai.
Sensei feels we are going into Daisan, trying to make Kai after Daisan.
So you are trying to adjust your shoulders after you make Daisan, and that makes it so much more difficult. The reason is as the weight of the bow gets stronger and stronger it is more difficult to adjust your body. Even though you may appear to be making the correct shape on the outside, inside your still having alot of struggle.
But in Daisan the bow isn't quite as strong yet, so you can really take that opportunity to establish your body possition.
So sensei goes on to say that you need to think of Daisan as where you make your Kai.

Good luck in your practice tomorrow.

P.S. A few words of wisdom. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, either alone or in front of people. Practice for correct form, the target is nothing, there is only you, your bow, and arrow.

Kyudo is a path, not a destination.

On the lighter side, competition is a good thing, just remember to put it in perspective and not let it get in the way of your training.

All is going as expected, there are 107 participants with 98 participants testing.
Sensei's are: Okazaki sensei, Kubota sensei, and Miyauchi sensie.
There are 26 Nidan's and 10 Sandan's in my group. If the ratio of Nidan's to Sandan's is any indication, this will be a tough test.
Much emphasis has been placed on Hanari at this seminar. At Wednesday's lecture Kubota sensei essentially said everyone at the seminar has a problem with Hanari. In Kyudo, you use your body to pull the bow, even after Kai and Hanari. Continue to stretch through to Zanchen. He's talking about follow through. Essentially Nobiai doen't stop at Kai, it continues all the way to Zanchen.
Some other points.
When we consciously aim at the target, Nobiai stops so Hanari is forced.
Stop trying to release, let the release happen.
That is why we fail to shoot well.
Use your shoulders to guide your hands apart, take the tension out of your hand, change the way you think about Hanari.
Don't get caught up in the aim. Even if your aim is correct, your bad form will cause you to miss the target.
Focus on Nobiai

There will be practice at Sensei's house. Please prepare for the brutal summer heat. Bring your own cold water to drink. Keep hydrated and use sun block on your skin. It is predicted to be 110 as the high. It usually is 90 degrees by 9 am.

There is a new session of classes at the Rec Center. Don Sensei will be at the Rec center.
Walter will lead practice of full distance shooting at the warehouse only. This is due to all of the equipment (yumi, yugake, and ya) are going to be at the that location. If you need to pay dues, please see Genrick or email. This weekend, Genrick wil be at an in-town Aikido seminar. Thank you.

Saturday, July 4th, 2009- Due to no classes at the Rec Center and being the holiday weekend, no practice this Saturday. Sensei will plan a date when we all will join to do taihai at the Rec center. Most probably 3rd week in this session.

Saturday's shoot went well. I'd like to recommend a design change to the A-Frame. The curtain hangers are not very sturdy and the two at the ends stretched out of shape, one broke. I recommend D-Links for the ends. Otherwise the A-Frame worked quite well.

Due to the dusty conditions at the warehouse I recommend street clothes be worn.
Remember safety is paramount, so don't wear clothes that may interfere with shooting. No jewelry, watches, etc.

Uniforms

Please wear your keikogi uniform if possible to practice. If you do not own a set of this attire, this is not an immediate concern. In time, you will be expected to maintain and own a set.

We understand if you have an engagement right after practice and unable change into street clothes. Please do not make this a habit every week or let it discourage you to practice.

Remember, wearing the uniform is part of your Kyudo training in decorum thus lending towards your refinement in the art.

Kind Donation

My father has kindly agreed to donate his old foam block for the group. He's planning on buying a new one in the near future so we will have it then. It is old and beat up but still in great condition and will definitely suit our purposes. The only problem now is to get a stand that will hold it. Any ideas?

A 18''H x 18''W x 11''D, 10 LBS, cost $39.99 each. This should stop a makiwara arrow at point blank.

Long distance shooting

Some cardboard boxes, 100' measuring tape, and I'm shootin.

I've come to a crossroad, should I pursue a Masters now, later, or at all.
It's my thinking a Masters will make me stand out in a pool of resumes.
The Reason I say this is a Bachelor's degree is fairly common place today.
Should I make the decision to return to college and get my masters, one very big reason would be; I don't want to answer the "How do I open Outlook" questions anymore.

Concentration - A Zen story

After winning several archery contests, the young and rather boastful champion challenged a Zen master who was renowned for his skill as an archer. The young man demonstrated remarkable technical proficiency when he hit a distant bull’s eye on his first try, and then split that arrow with his second shot. "There," he said to the old man, "see if you can match that!" Undisturbed, the master did not draw his bow, but rather motioned for the young archer to follow him up the mountain. Curious about the old fellow’s intentions, the champion followed him high into the mountain until they reached a deep chasm spanned by a rather flimsy and shaky log. Calmly stepping out onto the middle of the unsteady and certainly perilous bridge, the old master picked a far away tree as a target, drew his bow, and fired a clean, direct hit. "Now it is your turn," he said as he gracefully stepped back onto the safe ground. Staring with terror into the seemingly bottomless and beckoning abyss, the young man could not force himself to step out onto the log, no less shoot at a target. "You have much skill with your bow," the master said, sensing his challenger’s predicament, "but you have little skill with the mind that lets loose the shot."
